Running My First 50k Ultra in Barefoot Sandals: Embracing the Blue Mountains Challenge

When I signed up for the 50k race at Ultra Trail Australia in the Blue Mountains, I was excited to take on a new challenge. With a longest run of 36k under my belt, I knew I was maybe pushing my limits, but I was ready to run the race in my trusted Earthrunners barefoot sandals.

I went with the Earthrunners featuring the Earth Grip footbed for excellent traction on the trails. I had previously done a test run under battering rain and they held up extremely well.

To keep my feet warm in the chilly 3°C (37°F) morning temperatures, I grabbed a pair of Injinji toe socks at the race check-in. My merino wool top, beanie, and gloves completed the kit, providing optimal comfort and temperature regulation throughout the day, from the cool morning start to the warmer afternoon conditions. I was very pleasantly surprised that I didn’t need to change at all throughout the day and how well these regulated body temp.

I was the only one in sandals and definitely raised a few eyebrows, but got many cheers. The race unfolded as a true adventure – 50k of breathtaking Blue Mountains scenery, challenging climbs, and technical descents. Running in minimalist sandals allowed me to feel more connected to the terrain and rely on my leg strength and technique, especially on the steep downhills.

Throughout the race, I felt strong and in tune with the environment. The only challenging moment came after the particularly long and steep descent on the course. The lack of cushioning means that all shock is absorbed through the muscles, and it’s definitely more challenging than running with a shoe that offers strong built-in cushioning.

After 7.5 hours and 2,200 meters (7,200 ft) of elevation gain, I crossed the finish line, happy and in relatively good shape. Running an ultra in barefoot sandals aligns with my values of embracing natural movement and experiencing a closer connection to the earth beneath my feet.

The experience reaffirmed my love for trail running and ignited my desire to take on new challenges. I’m already planning to run the Hounslow Classic Marathon and the 100k race at Ultra Trail Kosciuszko, eager to continue exploring the trails in my minimalist footwear.

For those interested in minimalist or barefoot running, I encourage you to approach it gradually and listen to your body. Embrace the unique challenges and rewards it offers, and appreciate the sense of freedom and connection it can provide.

Ultimately, running is a personal journey, and the most important thing is to find what works for you and enjoy the adventure. Whether you prefer cushioned shoes or minimalist sandals, the trails are waiting to be explored. Embrace the journey and discover the beauty of natural movement.
