Editors' note

Miakoda is a forward-thinking clothing company deeply rooted in sustainability and ethics. With a primary focus on plant-based materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, and soy, their garments are not only comfortable but also kind to our environment.

  • Eco-friendly Fabrics: They embrace organic cotton that consumes less water, bamboo that enhances soil quality, and soy—an upcycled material. Additionally, they offer fabrics like Modal, sourced from Beech Trees, which is incredibly soft and eco-efficient.
  • Responsible Dyes: Miakoda ensures their dyes are low impact, nontoxic, and eco-friendly. White shades are derived using hydrogen peroxide, eliminating the need for harsh chlorine.
  • Stringent Supplier Standards: Their fabric suppliers maintain top-tier standards, partnering with GOTS certified or Control Union certified entities. Each fabric undergoes rigorous quality checks and is produced under fair labor conditions, ensuring no child labor.
  • Dedicated Factories: The brand collaborates with some of New York’s premier garment factories, guaranteeing products of the highest quality. These factories also preserve the ethos of ethical treatment, fair pay, and top-tier work conditions.
  • Social Responsibility: Miakoda is staunchly inclusive. Their commitment extends to promoting a diverse representation in fashion, from body sizes to ethnicities and gender identities. They’re on a journey to be socially sustainable, actively amplifying diverse voices and breaking industry stereotypes.
  • Eco-Conscious Packaging: Their commitment continues to packaging, with 100% recycled materials in play. Whether it’s shipping boxes, garment bags, or labels—every element reflects their green ethos.
  • Zero Waste Initiative: Understanding the challenge of fabric wastage, Miakoda has introduced a zero-waste collection, upcycling fabric scraps to prevent them from heading to landfills.
  • Circular Fashion: Miakoda encourages its community to extend the life cycle of their garments through a platform where customers can buy and sell pre-loved Miakoda pieces.

Miakoda, which translates to “power of the moon,” represents unity and connection. Founded by Julia Ahrens, a Parsons School of Design graduate and fashion designer, alongside co-owner Laura Ahrens, the brand’s essence is to make fashion harmonious with nature and its beings. Through their garments, they offer a sanctuary of comfort and consciousness, emphasizing that we all share this Earth and should care for it collectively.
