Editors' note

Kalaurie, based in Melbourne, dedicates itself to crafting modern heirlooms with a passionate emphasis on quality, timelessness, and environmental thoughtfulness. Their garments, handcrafted meticulously in their atelier, embody a long-lasting functional aesthetic that both honors and transcends transient trends.

Engaging in a made-to-order manufacturing model, each piece is carefully cut, assembled, and packed following an order, ensuring what is produced is precisely what is needed. This meticulous approach not only significantly reduces garment waste but also optimizes resourcefulness with materials, with a transparent production time of 4-6 weeks.

Moreover, sustainability weaves itself inherently into Kalaurie’s practices. Their collections often feature premium dead-stock and surplus fabrics and trims, reviving materials deemed undesirable by others and saving them from unnecessary waste. These fabrics find a new, beautiful existence in Kalaurie’s designs, while also minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, their shirting, buttons, and interfacings are entirely derived from dead-stock fabrications or alternative sustainable sources, such as biodegradable corozo nut or shell buttons.

Kalaurie’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in their packaging. Orders find their way to you in recycled cardboard boxes, wrapped in recycled tissue, adorned with dead-stock ribbon, and accompanied by postcards crafted from post-consumer recycled paper.

Kalaurie operates outside the traditional retail or wholesaling model, presenting trans-seasonal capsule collections that never go on sale, thereby encouraging responsible and intentional fashion consumption. Each design is offered year after year until the fabric exhausts its supply, nurturing a continuous, rather than disposable, approach to fashion.

Emphasizing local industry support, all labels, swing tags, boxes, and promotional materials are manufactured within Australia. Fabric and trim sourcing also prioritize local merchants and businesses, forging a brand that not only exudes global appeal but also staunchly supports local industries and sustainable practices.

Kalaurie demonstrates a harmonious balance between timeless aesthetic and conscientious crafting, ensuring each piece not only enhances your wardrobe but also resonates with a mindful and sustainable ethos.
